Lawyer by day, Vigilante by night, Matt Murdock tries to protect the innocent people of the crime ridden Hell's Kitchen, NYC. Blinded by chemicals after a freak accident, his senses have become heightened. Now, "the devil of Hell's Kitchen" must deal with two lives, romance, and psychotic crime bosses. As a child Matt Murdock was blinded by a chemical spill in a freak accident. Instead of limiting him it gave him superhuman senses that enabled him to see the world in a unique and powerful way. Now he uses these powers to deliver justice, not only as a lawyer in his own law firm, but also as vigilante at night, stalking the streets of Hell's Kitchen as Daredevil, the man without fear. I confess that I'm not a huge comic book or superhero fan, I'm more of a scifi nerd and can sometimes find god-like superheroes to be unrelatable and without weight to their action and stories, something about their demigod nature takes the visceral feel and characterization away. And I'm honestly burnt out with all the superhero oversaturization and was not excited about yet another Marvel series. <br/><br/>But I was completely blown away by this series. It's not the lighthearted, CGI action of the Marvel movies, or the indulgently dysphoric type of show like The Walking Dead or Game of Thrones, where it exists simply to attempt to one-up itself in more and more shocking moments with nothing redeemable. <br/><br/>This show is dark and gritty without it being about shock value at all. It really sort of reminds me of a D.C. version of Batman as Daredevil/Murdock being a conflicted and troubled hero with principles.<br/><br/>One of the greatest aspects to the show is that there are several characters other than just Murdock who have their own story and development and are just as important has he is. <br/><br/>Kingpin has a characterization in season 1 almost as compelling as Murdock's. <br/><br/>I find the acting fantastic, the action well choreographed and with true weight that you can feel. <br/><br/>I'm to the latter half of season 2 right now and I'm just as entertained with this season as the first. And they've introduced some other characters in this universe very well. <br/><br/>I also appreciate the smaller scale of this series compared to the Justice League, X-men, Avengers, where the heroes are so powerful that they need to keep just fighting god-like villains and it's always the world/universe in peril to the point where I just don't feel it anymore. <br/><br/>Daredevil is about people. Yes, some are quite unique, but they're people, and it's the city, neighborhood and everyday life that matters. It's a superhero show but it's a crime drama as well, similar to Batman. <br/><br/>I just can't recommend this show highly enough… Love it! Between the IMDb and Netflix ratings you'd think Daredevil was the greatest show in the history of television. The positives are that Charlie Cox seems to play the part of Matt Murdock very well and it's fun seeing Deborah Ann Woll in something post-True Blood. The action sequences are tame yet enjoyable and ultimately more realistic because this isn't Thor or Ironman… it's a blind guy that can fight. Thank you Marvel for not making this completely ridiculous. <br/><br/>That being said. Every episode feels like it's 10 to 15 minutes too long and this first season should have been 10 episodes - MAX. I can't count how many pointless and boring conversations have taken place that add nothing to the story. Fisk's henchmen/allies (Owlsley, Madame Gao, Wesley) are possibly the least interesting characters I've ever seen. Foggy is poorly acted and comes across as annoying rather than endearing. The whole production just seems stagnant overall. All of these strikes add up and I literally struggled to get through this first season. <br/><br/>I wanted to love this show because I support Netflix and am glad they are coming up with original programming, but unfortunately it's just not very good.

Season 1 has been confirmed to take place three years after The Battle of New York. Stick enlists Matt's help to destroy "Black Sky," a weapon that the Japanese mafia, led by Fisk's associate Nobu, are bringing into New York. Matt agrees on the condition that Stick restrain himself from killing anyone, but Stick breaks his promise when it is revealed that Black Sky is a young boy being held in a shipping container with chains around his neck and limbs. Stick fails to kill Black Sky while at the docks with Matt, but later says he killed the boy further up the road. Stick does not go into detail but says that the boy was more than "just a boy" and that Matt would have sensed this had he not been emotional at the moment. Black Sky is not a term previously found Marvel Comics so there is no clear parallel to be found there at this time. What exactly the boy named Black Sky is and how exactly he is a weapon is not revealed as of the first season of Daredevil, and any fan theories are pure speculation. In season 2; Elektra is revealed to be the Black Sky.
